Opening and closing the cavity between two stones of the Screebe weir, the water sings differently as it passes over and through.

Following the underside of the wind as it moves through the canopy of pines, the deep moss shag and gullies of the Twelve Bens influence the direction my listening takes.

When at last I reach the place where the water wells up from the rocks below the mountaintop, the blue grouse and I startle each other and they fly off. From there I follow the edge of water down into Panther Meadows.

The Matanuska glacier pours over and into itself. I follow the lines etched across its terminus--stepping, skirting, climbing, crouching--intermittently lowering the microphone, fishing for sound in a frozen hole.

For these recordings, the ear was in a continuously changing relationship to its subjects--purposefully casting shadows and listening for ways in to other nervous systems.
